Learn how you can have an email account in Blockchain

There is something we use every day that is rarely associated with Blockchain: emails. There are options already, but the number of users is still relatively low.

At some point in your "digital life" you had a Gmail account, Hotmail (now Outlook), Yahoo Mail, or one of the popular services that offer email accounts to users for free. The problem with these accounts is, as with many other Internet-based services, that emails sent and received are stored on a centralized server owned by a single company.

Although some startups are working to build decentralized email platforms based on Blockchain technology, they are still few and far between. These startups receive far less attention than organizations seeking to disrupt other technology niches, such as online search, for example.

Despite the apparent value of a Blockchain-based email service, there are relatively few in this market. These are just a few:


CryptaMail is defined as "100% secure and decentralized email to which only the user can access". On the site, the service explains that "there is no central server", which means "you do not have to trust third parties", not even CryptaMail. The e-mail service explains that the messages are stored in Blockchain and that it was built on the NXTCOIN protocol.


It is also an email service built in Blockchain. The company is also apparently building a larger decentralized platform where it can store other applications online.


Unlike previous services, SwiftMail only allows messages to be exchanged with other SwiftMail accounts, which limits the use of this service. Not being exactly an email account, this service founded by John McAfee is more a private messaging service than email itself.

So far, the number of users of these services appears to be small. This may be due in part to the fact that some users have expressed concern about whether companies actually protect users 'privacy and what would happen to users' messages if businesses closed.

Decentralized mail servers also raise other issues. Perhaps the largest is the sheer amount of data that would need to be stored in Blockchain to run a large-scale decentralized email platform.
